Mira Mezini is Professor of Software Technology at the department of computer science at Darmstadt University of Technology. She conducted research and teaching as a visiting professor at Northeastern University in Boston in the USA (1997 - 1999), at Lancaster University in the UK (2013 - 2016) and at the Università della Svizzera Italiana, Lugano (2022). She was dean of the department of computer science at TU Darmstadt from 2013 to 2014, vice president of TU Darmstadt for knowledge and technology transfer from 2014 to 2016 and vice president for research and innovation from 2017 to 2019. She is a member of the board of the National Research Centre for Applied Cyber Security ATHENE and co-spokesperson of hessian.AI, the Hessian Centre for Artificial Intelligence. For more than 20 years she has been researching programming paradigms and tools, programming methods for secure and reliable distributed software systems, methods for automated software analysis – especially software security. More recently, she has been researching the interface between software engineering and artificial intelligence (AI), with a focus on “differential programming” and programming languages for neuro-symbolic AI, as well as on the development of qualitative and secure code models for automated software development. Mira Mezini has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers in prestigious journals and conferences in the areas of software engineering and programming languages, and her work is widely cited. She was/is a member of various committees, including the computer science review board of the German Research Foundation (2016 - 2022), the international START/Wittgenstein jury of the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research of Austria (since 2019) and the executive committee of SIGPLAN – Special Interest Group for Programming Languages – of the Association for Computing Machinery (2018 - 2021). In addition, Mira Mezini was appointed to the ERC Scientific Council Search Committee by the European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth in 2020 and to the expert jury of the EXIST Research Transfer Programme of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Change (BMWK) in 2021. In 2022, she was elected as a member of the senate of the German Research Foundation. She has received various research awards for her research, including the IBM Eclipse Innovation Award twice (2005 and 2006), the Google Research Award (2017) and second place at the 4th German IT Security Award of the Horst Görtz Foundation (2014). In 2012, Mira Mezini received an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC), the EU's highest research funding award. Mira Mezini was appointed a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) in 2016.
